MECHANICAL MOTIONS
released on Remixes XX by Antilounge Records
“Mechanical Motions (OKIN-OMIS Remix)” is a reimagined version of the original track by Kid Baltan, the alias of Dutch electronic music pioneer Dick Raaijmakers. Originally produced in the late 1950s at the Philips Physics Laboratory—commonly known as NatLab—this piece was crafted using tape recorders, tone generators, and noise generators. The experimental compositions from NatLab are widely regarded as some of the first electronic music ever created.
Inspired by the track’s organic and percussive qualities, OKIN-OMIS approached this remix as an opportunity to deconstruct and rebuild the piece using modern techniques. The seemingly random and avant-garde production methods of the original allowed for a rich array of samples to be extracted from the vinyl recording. These samples were carefully sliced, edited, and processed, then layered with original field recordings to create a slow-burning, bass-heavy reinterpretation.
