"Eifel-Windpark [50,33349° N, 6,48124° O]" is released on ....
The recordings are made in Deutsch-Belgischer Naturpark Hohes Venn-Eifel on August 6th 2024.
All sounds are recorded with super-directional shotgun microphone, including a bidirectional side microphone, a geophone, contact microphone and electromagnetic receiver.
“Noorderhoofd [51,98021° N, 4,11153° O]” is also part of the long-form sound composition Upstream Ensemble, where mainly its geophone recordings were used.
This composition is initiated by TBA21’s Ocean-Archive, ocean comm/uni/ty and Pablo Diserens, who invited 35 field recordists to venture in the world and record aqueous sonic encounters. Upstream Ensemble navigates between the multiplicity of the water cycle as a sounding body. The work moves upstream through oceans, rivers, pipe networks, ponds, and glaciers while investigating the continuous flow of water and the environments that surround it. Here, the world’s aqueous fauna, flora, geologies, and technologies mingle into a synchronized motion that documents the sonic articulations of these wet zones. Upstream Ensemble is released digitally on TBA21’s Ocean-Archive website and physically released on the label forms of minutiae as cassette on Bandcamp.

Located at the European Route E25, connecting North- and South Europe, were just a fraction of it is located in the Rotterdam-The Hague metropolitan area as the Rijksweg 20 or A20. This motorway supported by several overpasses through South Holland, which one of them forms the base of this piece.
While the fast pace of humanity causes hot asphalt and infrasound moving through the construction, underneath a slower pace is causing more innocent bouncing echo’s. Impulse responses from the overpass echo’s are used to create a somewhat terrifying reverb scape, slowly building up. Dynamic impacts from the bouncing road surface above irregularly causing reflections scattering around the overpass’ concrete. These metallic-like hits are caused by vehicles passing the overpass.
The never ending sound waves once in awhile gets dominated by several other sound sources. Car horns translate the frustration from within, while trying to balance it out by amplified FM frequencies. Though this more pleasing part of the electromagnetic spectrum gets interfered by nasal higher frequencies from passing metros and trains. These pitched-down electromagnetic signals forming cold resonant harmonics.
These massive amounts of weight rolling over the railway also results in ground shaking infrasound allover the area. Rumbling frequencies vibrates through the concrete pillars underneath the overpass. Moments later fireworks suddenly feeds the already existing sonic tangle, followed by emergency signals which appear not less distinctive without the optical parts.
A narrative of a metropolitan area formed by a collection of sources both auditive and non-auditive for human. Recordings are partly manipulated by equalisation and time-based effects to create a soundscape from noise pollution by the pace of humanity.

Once Doggerland, an historical connection between Britain and continental Europe. Now an industrial area were fossils are found and traded, surrounded by salty water we today call the North Sea.
Located on the Noorderhoofd pier along the busiest waterway in Europe, in Hoek van Holland, The Netherlands. The waterway is a ship canal called de Nieuwe Waterweg, which makes the Port of Rotterdam accessible for seagoing vessels from and to the North Sea. It’s the largest port in Europe and specialised in the petrochemical industries and cargo transshipment handlings. Across the water of Noorderhoofd are the Maasvlakte and Europoort, which are very heavily industrialised with also petrochemical industries, aswell as coal- and biomass-fired power plants, styrene- and propylene-oxide production and transhipment of ore, coal and palm oil.
This industrial area is surrounded by beaches where crabs, shrimps and starfish can be found. By dunes with foxes, rabbits, lizards and moles. By the air with sandpipers, polecats, buzzards and seagulls. And by the water with seals, sea bass’ and garfishes.
The auditive beauty of these surroundings is abruptly disturbed by increasing buzzes, noise and suddenly appearing rhythmical radar frequencies presenting itself through electromagnetic signals. The infrasound from the petroleum industries across gets supported by a slowly growing even intenser engine rumbling. The waves crashing on the pier are rising, each one followed by a greater force.
An interference of low and high increasing frequencies, as a collaboration between human and nature, is resonating through a pole standing on the pier. Beholding the industrial infrasound and coastal acoustics, responding in the creation of abrasive metallic harmonics. This pole is holding a warning sign, to contain our behaviour on the pier.
“Dangerous waves from shipping. Enter at your own risk.”

"A Soundwalk Through Budapest [47.499553° N, 19.054739° O]" is an auditory representation of a field-recording session in Budapest on February 16th, 2022. This sonification of the city is created by several recorded one-shots and ambiences, placed in chronological order, resulting in this soundwalk concept.
The soundwalk starts in the elevator of the apartment complex located on Király Utca. As we exit the building, we are greeted by various street ambiences and daytime sounds. These ambiences form the basis of the intro, interludes and outro in "Buda’s Barrels" and "Madách Imre," which can be found on the same record. As tourists from a country with a different currency, the abundance of available ATMs in the city is really useful. Along the way we noticed that each ATM has a different pitch, timbre and processing. As the street ambiences evolve, its supported by these authentic sonic pulses from several ATMs.
The second location we arrive at is the Danube River. We are on a boat tour to capture the city’s illuminated landmarks, such as the Chain Bridge, Buda Castle District, and the Hungarian Parliament. The rumbling engine of the boat and the sound of moving water are accompanied by classical music and multilingual speeches, which are captured from the audio guide on the tour as a representation of tourism in this bustling city.
After the boat tour, we once again arrive on the city streets. Budapest, with almost 1.8 million residents, is under constant development, which can be heard as construction noises dominate the street ambiences. As we continue walking, the construction sounds gradually fade away as we arrive at Madách Imre út. On this street, we find several empty barrels. Each barrel has a different timbre and resonance, which can be heard in the presented hits.
As the barrels slowly disappear, our soundwalk continues at the tram station and then leads us to Budapest Airport, which slowly transitions to the flight back home to Schiphol Airport in Amsterdam.

"A Soundwalk Through Budapest [47.499553° N, 19.054739° O]" is part of the project "Buda's Barrels", released under Sem's organic dance alias, OKIN-OMIS. Besides the soundwalk, the record contains three dance tracks.
The project “Buda’s Barrels” is a sonification of Budapest and created by several recorded one-shots and ambiences from the city. The empty barrels, also mentioned in the soundwalk description, form the main percussive framework of the project.
This collection of raw material from Budapest results in unique auditory experiences and a distinctive artistic expression. By converting these surroundings into machines, “Buda’s Barrels” results in a sonic landscapes that immerse listeners in danceable sonifications of biotic rhythms and organic textures.
